Working in the UK
- Getting a UK National Insurance Number
See www.hmrc.gov.uk, or call your local Council, or call your local Job Centre with your postcode and work details to find your local office and make an appointment.
Take your passport, a letter confirming you are employed or registered with an agency and 2 or 3 other pieces of ID
In 6 to 8 weeks you will get a UK NI number in the post.
- UK Bank Accounts
The major UK high street banks are Lloyds TSB, Natwest, HSBC and Barcalys. We have a close working relationship with Lloyds TSB to assist you in obtaining a UK bank account quickly.
Opening a UK bank account is difficult due to UK Banking & Money Laundering legislation.
You will need as much ID as possible, including:
- Original passport
- Proof of address (bills, rent receipts or a lease)
- A letter from your employer/recruitment agency on letterheaded paper.
- Bank statements and a letter from your bank/s at home.
- UK Pensions
There are several types of pensions – check with your employer.
UK National Insurance contributions fund the state pension scheme. You can opt out of this State Second Pensions (S2) and put your contributions in a private fund.
Getting NI contributions back is not possible, unless you are a New Zealand citizen.
